A Study of Dental Health Control of College Students of Ewha Woman¢¥s University in Korea

Abstract
The author has made a plan of longitudinal study for a student group to control dental diseases and conditions through annual health examination with dental health consultation. The items of this survey are included dental caries, periodontal conditions, dentofacial anomalies, and developmental anomalies of teeth which have been checked since 1960.
This paper is the first report of the study of dental caries control. All college students except fresbmen (5,463) were examined in last April with the recommanded criteria and method of W.H.O.. Among them 5,354, aged 18 to 22, were selected for this study.
Those would be compared with the datas of 1967 and 1969 later to evalulate the incidence of dental caries of identified students, and to evaluate the present control procedure which has deen applide for several years.
The findings of dental caries study obtained through the the survey of 1968 so far have summarized as follow:
1. The average numder of present theeth was 29,00¡¾1.94. It was increased 0.15¡0.32 per year.
2. The prevalence of dental caries was 83.25% and DMF index was 14.56 Average DMF teeth was shown as 4.23¡¾3.80.
3. The average numder of DMF teeth per student in this survey was 4.23¡¾3.88. In age of 18, it was 3.95¡¾3.54; 19 was 4.04¡¾3.55; 20 was 4.35¡¾3.79; 21 was 4.32¡¾4.00; and 22 was 4.06¡¾4.20 teeth.
4. The average numder of decayed (D) teeth was 1.16¡¾3.11. 9.27% of the present decayed teeth was secondary decay. And 6.2% of the decayed teeth were indicated for extractions.
5. The average numder of missing(M) teeth was 0.69¡¾1.00. It included 5.26% of root fragments.
6. Average numder of filld(F) teeth was 2.38¡¾3.33. F-ratio of this group was 56.4%. Analysis by the filling materials revealed 43.84% of amalgam alloy, 26.20% of gold inlays, and 2.24%, the least, of silicate cement.
7. Analyzing by the individual teeth of caries experience, lower first molars were most attacked (26.82% of DMF teeth), lower second molars 22.71%, upper first molars 13.81%, upper second molars 9.98%, and lower anterior teeth were lowest in caries susceptibility.
8. Lower teeth were commonly more affected to dental caried than upper teeth. The rario was 60.42:39.58. No significance was found in compared with left and right teeth in their DMF teeth.
